Masters of Science in Clinical Translational Science

This program was developed at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center to provide professional students with the fundamental skills to perform clinical and translational scientific research. The program integrates core competencies from multiple disciplines to build a foundation of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, the clinical and translational research process and experimental design, informatics, effective oral and written communication, human research ethics and responsible conduct of research, cultural competency, research grant and project management, and professionalism and career development. The program also introduces students to researchers engaged in a wide range of research initiatives and requires the development of a research prospectus in a grant proposal format. The program culminates with a mentored thesis project that will provide the results needed to support a proposal for more advanced mentored resarch training or individual research projects. Faculty that direct MS in CTS courses are experienced clinical and translational researchers from OUHSC, OU-Tulsa, the University of Oklahoma and OMRF.

The Masters of Science in Clinical Translational Science was approved by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education in October 2008. The students have included residents, fellows, and junior faculty from multiple departments in the College of Medicine and the College of Pharmacy and other OU campuses. The target audience for the MS in CTS are individuals with a professional doctoral degree who are interested in becoming independent clinical and translational research investigators. Students in other OUHSC and OU programs have taken MS in CTS courses as electives in their graduate studies. Certificate in Clinical and Translational Science

Interest in a Certificate in CTS program has been expressed from students in doctoral programs in life sciences, social sciences, and bioengineering on the OUHSC and University of Oklahoma campus. A certificate program is currently under development to serve individuals who want exposure to the didactic clinical and translational courses but without the requirement of the mentored research experience and thesis requirement.
